ValueNode Accounting at Glance

From Academia to a Practice Built for the Future

Dr. Najlaa Kallousa, PhD, MBA, CPA, CGA didn’t take a traditional path to founding an accounting practice. A designated CPA with a PhD in financial accounting from the University of Calgary and a postdoctoral fellowship in taxation at the University of Calgary’s School of Public Policy, Dr. Kallousa has taught accounting at universities across Canada, the UAE, and Turkey — including Concordia University, the University of Dubai, Koç University, and Trent University. When she left academia to launch ValueNode Accounting, she brought that depth of research and financial expertise into building something most CPA practices never attempt: a fully systemized, data-driven firm built entirely on digital infrastructure from day one.

“I wanted to distinguish ValueNode to be not a traditional practice in Calgary,” she explains. “I wanted to utilize all my knowledge, my education, my research skills to come up with a systemized practice where everything can be handled electronically and digitally.”

She initially explored ShareFile and CCHiFirm, the go-to solution for many accounting firms. It fell short immediately. “ShareFile didn’t give me the integration I was looking for,” she says. “I’m not only looking for a place to share files securely — I needed everything to connect.” After more research, she discovered Assembly through an organic search — and knew within her first two-week trial that she had found the right foundation.

One Portal to Connect Everything

The core appeal of Assembly for Dr. Kallousa was simple: everything her clients needed could live in one place, fully integrated, without forcing anyone to jump between platforms.

“What I liked about Assembly is that I have everything in one place,” she says.

Inside her Assembly portal, ValueNode clients access a carefully structured file system organized by year, with subfolders for bank statements, employee information, government reports, invoices, and bills. Clients upload documents directly into the portal, where Dr. Kallousa and her team can act on them immediately — no email threads, no version confusion.

But ValueNode’s use of Assembly goes beyond file storage. Dr. Kallousa has embedded custom-scripted Google Sheets directly into each client’s portal, creating interactive transaction review workflows. When her team needs a client to clarify an expense, a script inside the sheet prompts the client to fill in the relevant column — and once complete, Dr. Kallousa’s team receives an automatic notification that it’s ready. Contracts and engagement letters are signed electronically through Assembly with a full audit trail, replacing what used to be a back-and-forth email process. Clients also book appointments directly from within the portal, keeping everything consolidated in one digital environment.

Looking ahead, Dr. Kallousa is in the process of connecting Looker Studio dashboards to her portal, giving each client real-time visibility into their financials — expenses, revenue trends, and key metrics — all viewable from their Assembly workspace. “My clients stress that visualization makes a difference,” she notes. “I agree: visualization is the most important part.”

The Results: A Scalable Foundation From Day One

The efficiency gains from Assembly are most visible at the point that matters most — onboarding. Before Assembly, setting up a new client’s file structure and shared documents from scratch would take upwards of five hours. Now, Dr. Kallousa duplicates a master folder template in minutes.

“It saves me more than 90% of my setup time for a new client,” she says. “What would take me at least five hours, I do in Assembly in 10 to 30 minutes.”

Electronic signatures with audit trails have further eliminated the friction of chasing paper. “I don’t have to go meet a client in person to get a signature. I can send everything electronically, and I have the full trail showing they signed it,” she explains. “That saves a lot of time.”

For a practice built to grow, the operational foundation Assembly provides has become a competitive differentiator. ValueNode serves businesses across Calgary’s childcare, healthcare, oil and gas, and nonprofit sectors — and Dr. Kallousa is actively investing in marketing to expand that reach. With Assembly already in place, she’s positioned to onboard new clients quickly and professionally, without the overhead that typically slows a solo practice down.

“It saves me so much time — just knowing exactly where to find things, and having everything streamlined in one secure place. I can get back to the work that actually matters.”
